Sentient Beings
I am obsessed with the human body: its intricacies, abilities and movements, its various embodiments and shapes, its complexities. For two years my desire has been to photograph the body in its natural form. Influenced by Imogen Cunningham and various other Group f/64 photographers, I wanted to create interesting and slightly abstract photographs by focusing in on the figure and the natural lines the body creates. Influenced by watching the movement of Tibetan prayer flags, I chose to create my own prayer flags. I created and dyed the silk banners as a way to create a situation in which the viewer interacts with the photos. I wanted to partition the photos from one another and from the viewer, thus creating a sanctified environment. Creating a sacred space causes the viewer to focus and contemplate on each photo as if the human body were something holy, in need of being revered as such, in its natural state. Prayer flags are often hung to celebrate new beginnings. The flags are silent prayers or blessings that are sent to the heavens as air fills the flags. The air causes vibrations to travel through the space and brings happiness and good fortune to all who are in the vicinity of the flags. May these flags celebrate a new beginning for how you see the human body, all human bodies: for their natural beauty, their lines, their perfections and imperfections and the happiness and joy that they may bring you.
