ARTIST STATEMENT
Choice
Throughout time, men and women have used any means available to them in order avoid pregnancies. More recently, the focus has shifted to preventing sexually transmitted infections. However, despite our highly sexualized culture, the secretive nature of contraceptives keeps them hidden from view. We may not know our various options, where to find a specific method, how much each costs, or at its very basic level: what does each method look like? My contraceptive posters are an attempt to present you with each method in its true form yet in a highly stylized, and what I hope to be an appealing, way. These images are not created with the intent to make you uncomfortable, or the opportunity to make lewd art. My theory is through more exposure to contraceptives and STI prevention, the more comfortable we will become in using and talking about them. I would like to thank The Emma Goldman Clinic, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa and Dr. Ann Laros at the University of Iowa's Student Health with providing me with all of the contraceptive samples.
